Beat the Devil: Shine in Exile 9/21/2007

I read somewhere that Beat the Devil is like a combination of Man Man, Billie Holiday and Tom Waits.  That’s pretty much right, in terms of identifying the style.

I hear they have a great live show.  I’m disappointed they don’t have any upcoming dates in NYC.  They seem to be playing just about everywhere else.

A while back I said I’d share what I found in the free music from SxSW ’07.  This is one, so was Bird and the Bee. I’ve been going through it for months now, and I’m still in the B’s, apparently!

The Bird and the Bee: Again & Again 9/16/2007

There is so much to catch up on!  I was going to post on the new Bird and the Bee EP Please Clap Your Hands, but then I realized I missed the not-to-be missed ‘Again and Again’ from last freaking year.

The Bird and the Bee – Again & Again (also check out the video on YouTube)

And then now they have this fantastic new EP! I just love their sound.  It’s like the Pipettes’ retro vibe meets Sterelab’s melodies. But with something more accessible and present than either.

The Bird and the Bee – Polite Dance Song

Update 7/25: The album for ‘Again & Again’ on Amazon’s new store is $8.90.  The single for ‘Polite Dance Song’ is only $3.68!

Viva Voce: When Planets Collide 9/5/2007

Not sure why I’m not so excited about Viva Voce yet. I mean they’ve got it all, including a great live show.  I like them at about an 8 now. I saw them open for someone last year at Bowery (‘last year’ in this context = between 6 and 24 months ago). Their message is all about love—they gave out fruit to people before the show.  In fact I think their new album, which I haven’t heard yet, is called Viva Voce Love You.

Back then, they were a 7, which is a T-shirt level of like (I recommend their T-shirts). Now that I’ve re-listened to Get Yr Blood Sucked Out, I’m at an 8, and kinda wondering why it’s not more.  I think perhaps because it’s not startling, or because I feel like I’ve heard it before.  You be the judge.

Viva Voce – We Do Not Fuck Around

Incidentally, I read somewhere that they’re looking to do soundtrack work.  I checked on their label-affiliate Bank Robber Music‘s website (which looks like a cool company, btw) that all they got was a measly placement on a fall episode of NBC’s highly questionable new drama Six Degrees.

John Vanderslice: Exodus Damage 6/19/2007

These songs are good.  You know what else is good?  His website.  Particularly the beautiful tour photos and gallery of former homepages.

(In case you were wondering, here’s the cease and desist letter for that last one.)

Peter Bjorn and John: Young Folks 5/27/2007

Some quotes from Stop Peter Bjorn and John:

I should start off by confessing that despite my best intentions, I did wind up walking by La Zona Rosa, the club where Peter Bjorn and John were headlining last night. And I was discouraged to see the size of the turnout — really, it was astonishing. This blog has a lot of work to do. I went by around 10 p.m., at a time when most of the clubs on Sixth Street were just getting started, and there was a huge line that stretched for maybe fifty yards. La Zona Rosa is really pretty far out of the center of town, too, so most of these people walked a long way. I have to ask: Who are these people? I spent a while lingering around, watching the people line up, trying to figure out just what the matter with them was. Really, it was a standard collection of hipster jackasses, with tight jeans and chunky glasses; people who no doubt had just read about Peter Bjorn and John on some stupid music blog (or on this blog — and yes, I’m aware of the irony, assholes, but my philosophy is that you need to educate people and let them make their own choices, foolish or not), who figured that they were the next big thing, and so made up their mind to get in on it. God damn it, it made me mad, the calculating cynicism of it.

And then,

One thing that a lot of us have probably thought when listening to “Young Folks,” or seeing video of their live performances, is: How does Peter do such an awesome job of whistling? He seems to nail it every time. Well, the answer is: he’s lip-synching the fucking solo. The KEXP performance is 100% proof. On at least two occasions, he accidentally starts singing over the solo. The entire facade of this band crumbles. They’re like a Swedish Milli Vanilli.

And finally,

This whole campaign against Peter Bjorn and John has pushed me to what I now realize is a total mental and emotional breakdown. I haven’t eaten in forty-eight hours, and the friends I am staying with have
basically asked me to get out. I simply can’t carry this burden any
longer. I have packed up my car and am leaving town.

Judging by the comments, it looks like a lot of people think the blog is fake—that it’s some sort of marketing gimmick timed for SxSW.  I don’t think so.  I believe!

Tragically (or hilariously), the movement was over before it really began. It looks like he didn’t even show up to his inaugural Stop PBJ event at the record store in Austin.  My heart goes out to him.
